Best tires for Ford Explorer

Believe it or not, the Ford Explorer has been around for over 20 years now; the first-generation Explorer opened up the market for midsize SUVs that got away from pickup truck-based designs, and was available with several drivetrains and trim levels. Since then, the Explorer has evolved through five different iterations, with the latest bearing little resemblance to the squared-off lines of the early 90s models. Things like power adjustable pedals, remote start, SIRIUS radio, DVD entertainment system and much more are now common on the Explorer, as well as much better power and fuel economy. Find your trim below and we'll find you the best tire matches.

Ford Explorer Tire Line Recommendations

The good news is that the Explorer’s tire needs have stayed pretty much the same over the last two decades. One of our favorite budget tires for the Explorer is the General AltiMAX RT – a standard all-season touring tire from the AltiMAX family of flagship tires. The AltiMAX RT features General’s Twin Cushion silica tread compound, with a high-density all-season top compound on top of a low-density foundation for smooth ride and sound absorption. The AltiMAX features a symmetric tread design with high-angle tread grooves, computer-designed to cut road noise. Internally, the AltiMAX uses twin steel belts and a polyester cord body for road manners and long wear.

Another great low-priced choice for the Explorer is the Kumho Solus KR21. The Solus KR21 is an all-season tire with an advanced carbon-compound tread formulation, molded into a computer-optimized tread pattern with independent shoulder blocks, notched intermediate ribs and a continuous center rib for stable handling and low noise. Four grooves at the circumference help fight hydroplaning, with sipes to cut through water and slush and enhance wet grip. Internally, the Solus KR21 features twin steel belts, nylon belt edges, a polyester cord body and spirally-wound single-strand bead for a precise tire/rim fit.

Need a true winter tire for nasty weather? Consider the General AltiMAX Arctic radial! The AltiMAX Radial is built with a cold—weather tread formulation and a tread design that features a center stability rib and directional pattern. The AltiMAX Arctic features high-density sipes across the entire tread for snow traction, and can be fitted with optional metal studs at the shoulders and intermediate tread blocks. You’ll know that the AltiMAX Arctic is up to the job with its industry mountain/snowflake stamp on the sidewall. NOTE: The AltiMAX Arctic should be installed in sets of four only.
